Billings Residence  Grand Junction, CO

The landscape concept for this newly built residence in the South Camp area of Grand Junction takes its cues from the surrounding native landscape. Nestled at the base of the Colorado Monument with its massive red rock formations, twisted evergreen trees and yellow flowering rabbitbrush this residence seeks to utilize these elements as the primary basis for the landscape design. Pinyon and Austrian Pine trees are used to frame the house and to frame outward views and to screen the neighbors house. Native boulders and rock mulch were chosen to match the red rocks, and low water use shrubs and perennials were selected to blend with the natural surroundings and to provide seasonal color and texture.

Geyer Residence  Fruita, CO

This interesting project located in downtown Fruita was designed during the fall of 2018. The owners were particularly interested in developing a modern and contemporary design with very simple lines and clean geometrical patterns. Through a series of communications using photographs, sketches, and written dialogue, Nvision Design Studio worked with the client to come up with a design concept that was not only simple and elegant, but modern and beautiful.  Some of the elements designed into the plan included shade canopies, sitting areas, a fire ring, customized fencing and climbing structures for vines.  The plant palette included an array of different ornamental grasses providing various colors and textures year-round, evergreen shrubs for screening views, and flowering crab apple trees for spring color.  The design also included raised planters, a low-water lawn area, as well as an RV parking area to host Air B and B guests at the property.  Many different materials were used for the ground surface including black and blue basalt rock and crusher fines, 3 to 6-inch river cobble, wood chips, and half inch tan granite rock mulch. The owner expects the project to be complete in the spring of 2019.

This project was a design-build residential back yard which was completed during the summer of 2015.  The design focused around three basic requirements: Include a circular track for the young children to ride their bikes, include a grass area large enough to host small-sided soccer games, and include a fire pit area for evening relaxation.  The perimeter path was constructed of gray crushed decomposed granite which complimented the large gray boulders and gray concrete perimeter edging.   The planting design combined the function of screening undesirable views with the placement of colorful and fruit-bearing shrubs to soften edges and large deciduous trees to provide shade and structure to the yard.  One particularly interesting element was the creation of a Hugelkulture berm (a permaculture concept) which basically used the branches from existing trees that were cut down and buried in the berm to create a carbon source for microbial decomposition and to provide nutrients for the drought tolerant trees, shrubs, and perennials.  Nvision Design Studio, Inc. designed and installed the automatic drip and spray irrigation system, plants, boulders, tan granite rock mulch, and steel posts that will be used as a climbing structure for Grape, Wisteria, and Virginia Creeper vines.  The construction took one month from start to finish.

Nicholson Residence  Redlands Mesa,  Grand Junction, CO

Landscaping in the High Desert regions of Western Colorado poses a highly difficult challenge.  The combination of cold winters, aridity (10” of annual precipitation), wind, heat, and poor soils is hard on many exotic and native species.  The planning of site elements, building orientation and micro-climate spaces determines much of the success of these landscapes by providing protection from the elements and providing manageable spaces for improving soil and moisture conditions. The community of Redlands Mesa located in Grand Junction, Colorado has developed site specific plant associations for the various ecological areas located within the development.  These associations are intended to include a variety of plants that are regionally adapted and visually appealing.

Nvision Design Studio, Inc. was hired to develop the conceptual design through the construction documents for the site grading and drainage, planting, irrigation, and landscape lighting for this beautiful hilltop residence.  The owners desired the landscape to be low maintenance, water efficient and to blend with the surrounding landscape.  The design follows the recommendations of the homeowners association closely, complete with high desert planting, integrated landscaping between lots, preservation of existing plants and boulders, and buffering of adjacent residences.
